The Seventh Word
“Father, I entrust my spirit into Your hands!” Luke 23:46
It was over. The whole bloody scene lay in view of everyone. Jesus was almost dead. He had done what he came to do. Unbelievably, every word which was predicted about him came to fruition.
He placed his future into his Father’s hands.
Whatever happens after the human body expires, wherever the spirit goes; Jesus sets the barre for us. He directs his own spirit, which came from God, back to God. Jesus shows us that his heart longs for heaven, and he turns his spirit over to the one who sent him for this great purpose.
At the cross… that bloody, nailed up, sweaty, stinky, dirty, splintery old cross… Jesus surrendered his spirit into God’s capable hands. Into the hands of a God who loves not only His own Son, but the sons and daughters who are yet to come. Forever. He loves all of us enough to handle our spirits.
Shouldn’t we, who are woven by a loving God, want to return to that loving God – not just at the end, but at every chance we get? Shouldn’t we be running to jump on our daddy God’s lap, ready to tell Him all of our hurts and sorrows, all of our pride and joy? Shouldn’t we want to go back to Him again and again and again? And then, when the end comes, won’t we entrust our forever, our eternity to Him?
I think so. I hope I remember to say that at my end. Because I will trust God to take care of my spirit. I know He will.
