It’s Halloween night, and I wish I would have taken a photo of you today. Maybe I’ll take one tomorrow, just to have a picture of how cute you both are! First of all, let me say what a treat it was that I got to be in your classroom, Line, to play the mummy game with you and your friends! Since I don’t really get to be around you in school, it was a nice change, and I enjoyed hanging out with you! And Fritz, it was a trick to help you understand that you had to wait until after school to get your costume on, but I was thrilled to be able to show you that I can be somewhere on time, and that I wasn’t going to let you miss trick or treat night!
Line, as Frankie Stein, daughter of Frankenstein, you were so adorable! I loved that you picked this out all on your own, and rather than be an Elsa or another princess, you went with what you really love, and I like about you! I like that you follow your own ideas and will, and you think that monsters are worthy of as much attention as Barbie or princesses.
Fritz, you are obsessed with TMNT, and so it was no surprise that you wanted to be a Turtle. I love that you let me put green paint on your hands and cover you with my smooches. You did not get a traditional costume, but let me put you in your turtle gear and parade you around like a real ninja dude.
Watching you both run around from door to do and scream trick or treat at people was entertaining and frightening (when you left the group). I think the best, most halloweenish part of the night was when you went to the spook house. Line, your face was priceless, and I prayed you would not suffer nightmares from it. Fritz, you are fearless, and you wouldn’t let a few hanging ghosts or crawling zombies keep you from some potentially great candy! I like that about you.
When you were ready to eat your candy, Fritz, I like how you wanted to go and sit at Aunt Byrd’s house with daddy, and Line, you stuck it out for three more houses, but not one more than that. You would not let Aunt Bee take you to any more than the three you agreed to. And I like that stubbornness about both my kids.
Even though you may not have been allowed to eat all of your candy in one sitting, you really behaved pretty darn well, and you seemed to enjoy yourselves!
Time is getting short for us to do this together. I know soon enough, you will be off with your groups of friends, trick or treating without me. So I’m so grateful I got to share the night with you!
