Operation Renovation Part Two

So, Friday after school and work, we were all “home”, but kind of doing our own thing.  The kids were playing, and I really hadn’t planned on finding them all home, so I came in to set my bag inside.  When I got in the house, Beef had started to remove the tub.  Here’s what it looked like before.  I’m sorry for the poor lighting, but there was only one small light in the back of the room by the window.  You an only imagine how hard it is to get clean in that kind of lighting!
This is the view from the kitchen looking to the window.  I have a front load washer, and I can not open the door more than 1/3 of the way, because there just isn’t enough room for it to open.  Not to mention, entering through the door (behind the tub) is quite challenging with a backpack and winter gear!

Here is a view from the back door to the kitchen:

Not exactly conducive to getting all of us inside with all of our stuff.  Especially if someone needs to take a shower!

When Chris ripped the vinyl surround from the wall, here’s what he found:

No, not the trash… the MOLD!

And after he ripped away the drywall, here’s what was underneath:

MORE MOLD!!!! And as if that wasn’t bad enough… that there are two layers of mold, that someone drywalled over paneling…

They drywalled over OUTLETS!!! OUTLETS IN THE SHOWER!!!! Not just one…

But Two…  And….

An air return  (see that black square under the pipes??)

Oh, we just continued to get more angry (and worried) with every swing of the crowbar.  With the finding of the mold, I called my mother-in-law, and asked if they would take the kids for the night.  I just didn’t feel right having them in there breathing all that mold.  So, I took them to town, and Chris kept working.  I had called a friend to come help us, and he was there when I got back.  They worked and they worked, and finally, they got the old laundry room looking like this:

So, we ate supper late, and called it a night finally around 9 p.m.
Saturday, we were up early.  I took the kids to swim lessons, and he went to get all the supplies.  We made it home for lunch, and the kids and I took a nap while Beef and our friend got the new mud room looking like this:

And that’s how we finished Saturday.  Beef got the mud up, and yes, that’s a patch in the floor, where the rotted wood was “hiding” under the tub.  And… we used one of those hidden outlets to put a new light in, so we can see what we’re doing!

This morning, I started painting, and here’s the finished walls…

And a lovely shot of the benches Beef made for us:

The wood for the benches is tongue and groove.  We saved it when we demolished the north porch last year.

It is also the wood on our coat hooks.  The hooks themselves were claimed when mom and dad moved.  I think they came from my grandma’s house, or my parent’s house.  I found a bunch of them in an old rusty Butter Nut Coffee Can.  The kind you had to use a can opener to get the lid off of.

I learned a lot from this project.  It’s my new favorite room, and it’s not even done!  We still have to install the floor, the crown molding, and shelving.  But I love the color and the space!
