I used to link with MamaKat long, long ago. Since I’ve “returned” to blogging, I have picked back up with her writing workshops. I clicked on her “Pretty Much World Famous” writing prompt and “Got My Inspiration On”. My prompt is, “Ten Reasons Why You Love Your Job”. Without further ado… here’s my top ten!
10. I work at the end of my road. Literally. Get up, get ready, get out and head West to the end of my road. That’s where my job lives. I live at the East end, my job lives at the West end. Of the same street. We are the last stop at either end of the road. It’s like destiny. I love the short commute. I love that we are able to walk the short distance to school when the weather permits. (I’m a wuss) I can sing the Smokey and The Bandit theme song coming or going and its relevant!
9. I’m getting an education, and this time, I’m paying attention. Since I get to help students achieve to their fullest potential, I am required to be in class with them. While in class, I expect them to listen, concentrate, and participate. And I do the same. While technology and methodology have changed the landscape of education, I appreciate this new learning environment, and I must say that these changes inspire me (and I hope the students) to not just memorize answers, but to love the journey of reaching the correct answer! My Rhetoric Instructor (way back when I went to school) used to say, “Learn for your life, not for a test.” Man was he smart!
8. Everyday is something new. Whether it be in the weather, the curriculum, or the simple fact that young people are just so entertaining, everyday offers another opportunity to witness something new and incredible! There are reasons why people go to work, for me, it is learning something new, accepting a challenge, and working it out, and the excitement of something new that may occur. I love the variation and fluidity of the job I have, and I look forward to the “what’s going to happen today” of every tomorrow.
7. The smell. I love the smell of books and pencils and crayons. I’m not thrilled about vomit and other sickness bugs, but I do love that “clean school” smell. I love the smell of the art room. I miss the smell of that spray that the art teachers use to adhere the chalk to the paper. I forget what it was called, and they probably don’t use it anymore, because it is probably unsafe, but I remember that smell, and I miss it.
6. The people. I love the people I work with, and those that come to visit. I love the little people who come in the building every day, ready to see their friends and learn something new. I love the way they think, and enjoy watching them as they figure out ways to work out their next scheme, or how to get their work done in a way that pleases the teachers.
5. Change is great! This kind of goes along with number 8, but I want to talk about curriculum specifically here. Way back in the day, when I went to school, I had no idea what curriculum even was! I knew we got Math books and Social Studies books each year, but most of our other materials were copied on the purple mimeograph. How thrilling it was on a year when new books were issued, or you were lucky enough to get a book that someone you knew had used. It was exciting to look inside the front cover and see your older friend or your babysitter’s name on the first line or two, indicating that they had used the book before you. Nowdays, that’s not a great thing. So in my opinion, change is great!
4. School Supplies. I always have a reason to buy school supplies. It’s my job now, as a mom and an employee. I love it! The smell of new paper (like books) makes me giddy.
3. Awesome projects. When a teacher needs help, I get to be their “assistant” on some pretty awesome projects. Like dreidel making and packing take home folders. I seriously love it!
2. Parties. I’m there for the celebration of all kinds of things. And I’m there as both mom and employee. I love it.
1. My kids. The ones I gave birth to, and the ones I am blessed to work with. I love the interesting ways they think, the way they view and respond to their world, and the way they live. I enjoy watching them problem solve and hearing them laugh. Seeing how they relate socially, and grow developmentally each day is especially interesting. I am very blessed because I have a job that I really do love!
